When appropriate, we notify affected members and providers to help them navigate the situation as smoothly as possible.

Doctors may see a drug shortage affecting Blue Cross NC members in their care. If so, doctors can see expanded coverage for similar medications. If the desired medication is not on a covered list, then they can submit a prior authorization for an alternative drug and reference the shortage as a reason for coverage. We encourage doctors to speak with impacted members and educate them on the alternative options as all changes are dependent on member plan coverage and formulary design.
